Last non-HEP Silver Star ran in 1982 I think.

What always amazed me about Auburndale was how quickly the Silver Star (or was it the Meteor?) got split or reassembled at Auburndale back when that's where they split.  And it was done by onboard T&E, not station crew, as far as I know.  Compared to all other train split locations such as New Haven (most NHV-SPG trains), Albany (48/49), and Spokane (7/8), Harrisburg (40/41) and even Pittsburgh (29/30), Auburndale was consistently the fastest, in my opinion.

Splits and combinations like this seem to work quite well for overnight [sleeper] service in Europe (and the US for what trains still have them). Seems to be a good utilization of equipment and good way to secure additional riders. Yet Amtrak has driven this off - dumbing down operations..
