The train in question appears to be train 2 that departed LA on May 6.

"..."...Nieves allegedly told police that he had the Glock for two weeks but did not remember where he acquired it, police said. He also said a friend gave him the gun, but he would not identify the friend, police said."

In some places, merely possessing a weapon used in a previous crime is a crime in itself.

I have several firearms and have had some of them for several years and I can tell you where I got every one of them.  That also includes two air rifles.  You don't receive a firearm two weeks ago and not remember where you got it unless you deal in a hundred firearms a week.

All he has to do was get off the train in Yuma as his ticket said and this never would have been an issue.

He probably thought that if he bought a ticket from Wherever to Yuma and just stayed on until the train arrived where he REALLY wanted to go, he could save a little money.  But this way he gets free meals.

Among other deficiencies, the subject doesn't appear to be the sharpest tool in the shed. Based on what is reported in the news story, it sounds like Maricopa PD exercised a lot of restraint, especially considering what happened in Tucson last year.
