1 AM and #6 is only at Gorge?  Glad I'm retired.  I did countless all-nighters in my 42 years behind the throttle.  Can't say I liked it much.

This is an old Amtrak OBS habit. When I got an assignment it was for, say, #14- not "14 and 11”. The return train was assumed. So I my world the Coast Starlight was simply “14”, the Chief was “4”, the Zephyr “6”, and so on. It was the same for the Capitols. Capital assignments were a string of 10 individual moves back and forth, but collectively grouped as the starting schedule number, and the number implied all 10 trains.

It might LOOK like anywhere else at 1AM but it does not smell like the Kensington neighborhood of Killadelphia!!
