NJ Transit takes BLE&T to court
Author: Lackawanna484

NJ Transit has taken the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen to court over what it described as an illegal job action. NJT has cancelled hundreds of trains as engineers call in sick.

In the federal court hearing, a BLE exec admitted sending an email encouraging members to celebrate the Juneteenth holiday. Although most NJT employees are under new contracts which pay for the holiday, the engineers older contract doesnt't.

In the title, it should be BLE&T not BL&E.

Looks like this BLE&T local badly miscalculated the impact of Friday's action, if they thought this would coerce management to ratify at 11:59pm Thursday night, and management didn't blink.

They got a harsh rebuke from management, by a federal judge, and turned an otherwise neutral or unaware riding public against them after a day for them of late for work, pickups from daycare, lost hourly wages, ruined job interviews, strandings, taxi bills, hotel bills, missed classes, missed medical appointment, missed flights.

There is a lot of anger building uo over not being treated like people. It's not just engineers and not just rails. I have heard from folks that feel they have nothing left to lose. People who feel they have nothing left to lose may do what some consider to be unreasonable and extreme.

TAW is right. The stratification of socio-economic classes in the USA is not something confined to the railroad industry, obviously this is a societal problem.
This is something that goes back to at least the 1970’s, farther really.
There are many interesting articles on the internet regarding this problem and how it has shaped modern American attitudes.

There is no more dangerous man than a dead man walking.

Regards.
