Capitol Ltd. 29(3) vs. big rig, Brunswick MD
Author: GenePoon

Moron tractor-trailer driver drove onto the tracks in traffic with no place to move when the train approached. Train struck the big rig's trailer which then collided with another vehicle. The driver in that second vehicle was injured. No injuries among the moron truck driver, the passenger in the second vehicle and the 142 crew and passengers on the train. Capitol Limited 29(3) was delayed somewhat over an hour. It is now 1 1/2 hours late, past Cumberland.

Great outcome for Amtrak.  Nothing derailed.  Only 1.5h down.

Agreed! I heard there was a station damaged. Owner was reported to be MARC. If so, it'll all work out. Could have been a much worse outcome.

I hope the injured motorist recovers soon and collects big time from the trucking company.

But not so great of an outcome for the injured 130 year old.

Vermont's VTrans and Amtrak insisted the dis-used, brick New Haven, VT depot be moved elsewhere since it was very close to the tracks and the grade-crossing.

Maybe Amtrak locomotives should be retrofitted with giant brush bars (tongue in cheek)

Hope the moronic truck driver loses his CDL and pays a big fine.

Are you referring to the depot?

The station building in Brunswick will be closed until further notice due to structural damage sustained from last night's grade crossing accident. Please plan accordingly. Restrooms are available on board each train. During this time passengers will not be able to access the ticket machine, but may purchase one way and round trip tickets on board without penalty. Please note that only cash may be used -- credit cards are not accepted for on board purchases. The CharmPass App is also an option.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

A friend of mine was on the Cap Limited--photos courtesy of Tony Motsco. The fellow in the pickup truck was transported to the hospital.

Upon arrival in Chicago, my friend took this picture of the nose of AMTK 51. Nary a scratch.

CSX to mayor:

We don't care. Go away.

The mayor doesn't know what he's talking about. His opinion directly contradicts that of first responder statement that attributed the "traffic condition" to a red (highway) signal one block north of the incident grade crossing. So...unless the mayor is suggesting that CSX had a freight train parked on Potomac Street [and I can assure you they did not]--blocking traffic on Maple Avenue--the mayor is totally clueless. Note that I'm only reporting what was stated to have caused the traffic condition. The cause of the accident, I suspect, will be determined to be driver error, on the part of the tractor trailer driver.

"In the letter, Brown wrote that before Wednesday’s Amtrak train crash, the south train tracks at South Maple Avenue were blocked for two hours by a CSX train sitting on the tracks."The blockage created significant traffic that didn’t clear up in time for a tractor-trailer hauling lumber to move out of the railroad crossing area, with an Amtrak train approaching, the letter says."

The space between the tracks and the stoplght is enough for normal traffic flow. Back up traffic for a couple of hours and that creates an artifical peak. The blockage may also have led traffic to try alternate streets increasing the traffic on the road where the incident occurred. In other words, the mayor may know what he is talking about.
