Passenger Trains > NJ Transit stored equipment?

Does NJ Transit have stored passenger cars and locomotives stored due to the downturn in business?

The are running most of their pre-Covid service, except for 3 Long Branch - Hoboken rush hour round trips, so likely not. 

I don't think things are necessarily "stored," but there's extra cars around that NJT has. They largely kept cars serviceable through the pandemic and didn't "mothball" or store cars like Amtrak did. I would venture a guess that if NJT was approached to loan our or have some cars leased out - they'd be able to accommodate it. NJT also just had a batch of "comet cars" scrapped, after they were parked in a storage yard. Those cars were newer than Amtrak's Amfleet cars!!! For the most part though NJT more actively  disposes of the cars they plan to retire and discontinue. 

The 45 Comet-III were all ruined by Sandy's floodwaters, beyond repair. They had to be scrapped. They only waited for the bank liens to wear off. Metro North has two in Croton Harmon being cannibalized.

Yea, some genius, I forget his name, wanted to see if  "The 45 Comet-III "
were amphibious vehicles and left them at the MMC flood plain to test them.
Never understood why all that equipment was never moved to higher ground
in Raritan, Dover, Port Jervis or wherever. Incompetence at its best at NJT!

NJ Transit has an agreement to use the former GM lot south of Linden Station as an emergency storage facility in the event of a water incursion at the MMC or Hoboken in the future.

I checked it out this past summer, and it doesn't look like anything is different. I figured there might be fencing and plug in heater HEP boxes, but didn't see any.

I photographed some passing trains from the street that runs alongside the far edge of Linden Yard three weeks ago. Had I not been told later that Conrail had made arrangement with NJT for the yard's use as emergency storage, I wouldn't have had any inkling about it, and suspect that "emergency storage" does not envision spending a lot of money on infrastructure or securement. The only cars in the yard were 13 fairly heavily tagged ballast hoppers.

The only stored locomotives are those that have been replaced by newer units. This included ALP44/A and MK rebuilt GP40PH-2 units. Also, a few PL42AC units are also stored do to mechanical issues. 

Most of Conrail's Stiles Street Yard is currently being rebuilt by Conrail maintenance of way forces. Different rumors are floating around as to  the reason why it's being rebuilt.

There may be a couple of F40's in passenger service, but I don't know. NJT does not publicize its roster. 

Since the Linden yard is wide open and unsecured, it would make total sense NOT to put anything there until absolutely necessary.  Anything  that looks of reasonable value would disappear and any equipment would become a target for tagging literally overnight.  As long as the track that is there is still usable, simply leave it be.

Nobody said to make it a layup yard, but for emergency uses. We see no sign that it is suitable for even that. 

As mentioned above...CR and NS crews have been fixing up stiles st yard over last couple weeks.   Lots of speculation about why...
