Passengers aboard a San Jose-bound train failed to notice that a man died during the journey, and he was not spotted until several hours later at the end of the line on Friday, Bay Area Rapid Transit Agency authorities said.

According to BART spokesman James Allison, the unidentified man boarded a BART train at Bay Fair Station in San Leandro at 6:48 p.m. Thursday. The man moved around the train until 8:22 p.m. and then disappeared from view of a security camera, Allison said.
Other passengers were moving around the train and around the area where the man was last seen on camera but didn’t seem to respond to anything unusual, Allison said. The man was found at 2:20 a.m. at the end of the railroad track during a routine check by BART scrubbers and police before the train cars were withdrawn from service.

A cleaner found the man in “apparent medical emergency” and reported this to a police officer at the Berryessa/North San Jose BART station. According to authorities, the man was unresponsive and had no pulse.

“He had drug paraphernalia in his possession and there was no evidence of third-party negligence,” Allison said.

The police began giving him medical attention and gave him a dose of naloxone, a drug that can block the effects of opioids. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, took over and reported his death at 2:55 a.m. BART police ruled the incident an unattended death.

One less drug user on BART--good news.  I'm fed up with them.  Adults who act like children.  Hope the "high" was worth it.

There have been some of these subhumans who, when saved from death by first responders with a dose of Narcan, have been angry because that "ruined their high."   They would rather have the high and then die?  Guess so, in which case I do not value their lives any higher than they do.

Addicts are enslaved by their addiction. Mostly because withdrawl is such an awful experience.
But no one forced them to try drugs in the first place.

Yes and no. Quite a few of the opioid and synthetic opioid addictions occuring today did not start with recreational drug use, but rather with opioid painkiller prescriptions given for legitimate medical reasons. The medical community got too comfortable with opioids pushed by drug manufacturers, and this is the result.

When I had surgeries in years past and they asked if I needed pain pills, I said I would do without for this very reason.  I stuck to Advil.

Tough to say if it was nasty or not. No violence involved, so it was not nasty in that regard.

What happened is not a surprise, based on what I've been observing on BART in recent years. "Transients" look around the train for an isolated corner, and stay in that area, usually not bothering other passengers.

Who knows, maybe he liked riding trains. You can say that he died doing what he enjoyed - drugs and trains?

the problem of addiction is well beyond the scope of public rail transit.

the problem of illegal drug use, especially smoking fentanyl, on public rail transit can be dealt with by public rail transit.

efforts could be made through law enforcement to stop illegal drug use on public rail transit............

That might help, but the problem is way bigger than law enforcement - related to folks coming back from wars that in some ways make WWII easy to deal with to a government that sees them is pretty much disposable, corporations moving good-paying jobs overseas, developers gentrifying to the extent that regular folks have a hard time finding somewhere to live...and the general need for lots of folks to escape a dead-end life.

no argument here but i think those issues are the responsibility of our government and are in need of our tax dollars.

i think public rail transit's objective and responsibility is to provide SAFE and efficient transportation............

I agree on the responsibility comment but I am skeptical as to whether today's foremost objective is to provide
efficient transportation. That may be stated in mission statements, but there's little evidence of its existence.

Right, but a person doesn't have to be using on the train or bus to be affected by it. Most transit handles too many people to be testing everyone, even visually, before they board.

you don't have to test everybody.

employ enough law enforcement on the trains and in stations that are trained to recognize the POSSIBLE symptoms of being under the influence of an opiate.

in this day and age that might be easier said than done..........

The PATH police, federal TSA and Jersey City police did a rush hour screening of commuters at Exchange Place in Jersey City NJ. It did not go well. Long lines, angry voters, etc.

NYPD occasionally tests weapons and explosives dogs and various electronic screening in midtown subway stations. Non invasive.

while you may or may not know all there is to know about RR dispatching, RR other things; unless you carried a rifle in combat during World War II or can share some alternative experience or expertise; YOU ARE UNQUALIFIED TO RENDER AN OPINION ABOUT "WAYS TO MAKE WW II EASY TO DEAL WITH."  Suggest you talk to any surviving veteran or perhaps visit the WWII Museum in New Orleans and get educated before disrespecting those whe sacrificed and helped allow you to live in democracy.  World War II was not easy to deal with for those who fought and for those who suffered and lost loved ones during a world wide catastrophe.  What was worse than that?

I understand and appreciate your passion, but this is not a good argument.
