Passenger Trains > #5 and #6 in the Rockies today, good news and bad news

I was shocked this morning to see that #6 that originated in CA yesterday was pretty much on time at Provo, UT.  Anyone know the last time the train was less than 30 minutes late at that point?

On the other hand, #5 will meet that same #6 shortly.  #5 is over 12 hours late, having lost the time in Nebraska.  Anyone know the story?  They left Denver at 6:27 pm yesterday.

12 hour delay equates to Human suffering -- regardless of cause.

Can't wait for the STB to take up the On Time case before it.

It was a Grade crossing incident I believe.

So how are the STB and the On Time case going to affect something like this? Does Amtrak intend for overreaching meddling to result in the freight railroad being the whipping boy for:


LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A McCook woman is dead after she was hit by a train while driving a U-Haul early Tuesday morning.

According to the McCook Police Department, authorities were alerted to an injury accident on a railroad access road near East 11th Street just after 4 a.m.

Authorities say a crash took place between an Amtrak train and a U-Haul truck. The U-Haul’s driver, 27-year-old Courtney D. Steer of McCook, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The train, the California Zephyr, was on its way from Chicago to Emeryville, California. It was held in McCook after the crash, resulting in an eight-hour delay for travelers.

The McCook Police Department is being assisted by the Nebraska State Patrol in its ongoing investigation.

I wonder how many people Amtrak trains kill per year? Most of them due to their own negligence but still they are dead. Versus say Southwest airlines that hauls far more people than Amtrak, and kills zero passengers or pedestrians or drivers. Grade Crossing and trespasser incidents are one of the reasons why train service will never work well in the good old USA, unless we have totally separated right of ways. And we know that’s not going to happen.

That is a strange argument. Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch National Railway, has 2,589 level grade crossings on its 2,003 mile network and the train service seems to work quite well.

With all due respect to the deceased and family , why was the train delayed / held for Eight hours in McCook ?  Over the years I've been on Amtrak trains that hit trucks and a pedestrian on  three occasions , and the train was held about an hour for the tragic investigations. Eight hours ? 

If you want to use this logic, than you need to never use a car again.  Automobile accidents killed over 38,000 people last year while people that walk everywhere don't kill anybody.  And while your at it, close all the restaurants, they kill over 3,000 a year from food poisoning.

Yeah as usual you claim human suffering without knowing how things turned out and why the train sat where it sat because of some unforeseen circumstance, that's a terrible mindset you have Ronald!
