Amtrak PSR?
Author: MacBeau

49 went through Elkhart as a 3-19-2-5-0 today. Apparently it picked up 29. Also noticed the URL for Elkhart railcam changed.

Anytime one of the youtube cams goes down the url is different when it comes back online. I believe Elkhart went down for a few hours earlier this week.

It was a "Precision Scheduled Railroading" joke, alluding to all the double-length freight trains these days.

Amtrak #29 broke down in northeast Indiana this morning, so Amtrak #49 was doubled onto it despite having eight private cars on its rear end.

3 engines, 19 cars, 2 engines, 5 cars.  Big Lake Shore Limited with the private cars going home.  Normal sized Capitol Limited on the rear.

#49 had the 100-105-130 with 11 cars of the Lake Shore Ltd then 8 private cars and rescued a disabled #29 with the 55 and 85 with 5 Superliner cars.  Twenty four cars in total, made stops for the 449 section, then 49s and finally 29 traffic.  Elkhart was a 12 minute station stop.   Would be interesting to hear how the train was handled at Chicago on arrival.

Can anyone list the names of the eight private cars?

Tracks 28-25-19 would be one solution.
Track 25 connects south side track 28 to north side track 19
and provides a continuous platform.

What to do if track 19 is unavailable?
In pre-amtrak days if it was a Burlington train a yard engine
would have followed it in and set the rear end over to another
starion track.
