Electrification over freight-owned track?
Author: MattW

This is really just a quick question, but is there any place in the United States where there is electrified passenger service over freight-owned track? For all of the systems I can think of off the top of my head, there might be some remnant freight service, but the line is owned by the transit agency, not the freight railroad.

Probably the last electrified passenger service over a freight owned railroad was the CSX Trenton Subdivision between Woodbourne, Pa and West Trenton, Pa. Both tracks were electrified for passenger service, dispatched by SEPTA, but owned by CSX.  About 10 or so years ago the main tracks were separated, with the Philadephia bound main track becoming a dedicated track for SEPTA service in both directions and the West Trenton bound main track becoming a  dedicated for CSX freight service in both directions.

did the other track then loose its wires, or was the juice turned off?

It's a fairly complicated mess, but I believe UP owns one of the main lines through San Jose station with the Joint Powers Board owning the rest.  Depending on what tracks get electrified into San Jose by CalTrain, you might have that situation occuring.

To answer your question, I looked at Google street-view from July, 2019
and, more recently, a SEPTA "cab ride" video from March, 2021. Answer?
The other track did not loose its wires - catenary wire still above track.
Don't know if the juice was turned off.

There is a short section in Norristown Pa. where CR now NS runs their freight traffic under Septa catenary. Double stacks and all. It's on the connection from the ex PRR Trenton Cutoff to the ex RDG mainline at Norris. -- Ken

Two historical examples: The former Pennsylvania Railroad track from Virginia Avenue in DC to Potomac Yard was an example of electrified overhead with no electric passenger trains beneath.  Conrail put a stop to that quickly enough.

There was a short stretch of electrified overhead on the Lehigh Valley Railroad between the lead to the NEC and Meeker Avenue in Newark NJ to allow delivery and pickup of Lehigh Valley trains to NY Penn Station

Track 1 at the San Jose station is UP's track.  It's also used by Amtrak and ACE.  It does not have overhead wire.

South Shore Freight owns the mainline from the connection at Kensington, IL with Metra Electric/CN to the Indiana state line. NICTD cannot own property outside of Indiana.

In regards to the wires over CSX track between West Trenton, NJ and Langhorne, PA, a quick visit today shows the contact (trolley??) wire removed from the third track used only by CSX.  There are 3 tracks between Langhorne and to just west of the Yardley, PA station. From Yardley to West Trenton, Septa uses only the old number 1 main, while CSX uses only the number 2 main.

1.  Septa Silverliner V car 738 on the switch at Yardley headed for West Trenton today.  The foreground track is CSX only.

2.  Another Silverliner V car inbound crossing Stony Hill Rd between Yardley and Woodbourne.  Note the missing wire over the nearest track (CSX).  Also noted is new (2021) CWR laid out along the Septa outbound (middle) track.  It is only 115lb rail.  Seems rather light for a heavy rail operation.
