One take on ridership
Author: wilewil

From Washington radio station WTOP.

Note in spite of title (home town bias maybe) mentions all traffic mentioned.

This post should definitely generate plenty of traffic on TO.

Blah, blah, blah to justify spending in NEC
Easy to compare with 2021 when nobody was .
How about a comparison with 2019?

Acela
FY19 - 3,577,455
FY22 - 2,144,369

Would be helpful to see month over month to determine how last winter affected ridership (COVID impacts); regardless, this massive ridership dropoff is indicative of the same changes the airlines are seeing in NE Corridor markets - big swaths of business travel is gone.

So "profitable" Acela is down 40%, coinciding with its frequencies. Zoom has made its impact and I think some of it is permanent. So cut Acela fares to justify more frequency, draw people off some of the Regionals so they can send dozen or so Amfleet to the Empire Corridor or Chicago. They have 20 or 21 Acela trainsets now. I don't see how they will able to justify 28 Avelias.

Google Amtrak ridership and you get several articles. Sounds like positive publicity release but lacks specific numbers.

Based on air travel and highways there should be positive results

Good news, ridership is recovering much faster than Amtrak predicted. Wouldn’t be shocked if it’s at ~95% of 2019 levels by next fiscal year.

And those 2019 numbers amounted to about ONE percent of the entire transportation pie for America.

So what’s your point other than to complain?

I pointing out that 95% of a drop in a bucket is still... Just a drop in a bucket.

That's all they have been since 1971, so what is your point ? It is more than 1% in the specific palces they have routes, and on some LD routes, the only way to go by ground public transportation (like from Grand Jct to Reno or Williston to Spokane)..

It would be news if Amtrak was increasing market share. That would be a real story!

The only way to do that is to run more trains between the counties busiest cities. Preferably at high speed.

And that's what they do in other parts of the world. Run as a business, not novelty transportation.
