Passenger Trains > Signal/track issues on UP Winnemucca sub

According the Trains Mag this morning UP is asking permission to turn off it's signals on part of the Winnemucca sub. UP says problems with blowing sand. Maintenance of  way union says this is due to what used to be called deferred maintenance and UP's refusal to spend what it takes to keep that stretch of rail operational. Union says there are track issues as well that have not been addressed.

This speaks volumes about the recent ongoing negative impacts to Zephyr OTP. 

In another story on Trains Newswire UP says it made "record profits" recently. Hmmm. Guess we know where some of those profits come from. Amtrak passengers and crew having to pay the price for UP's poor management.

The STB should slap down UP and their downgrading of the WP tracks.  No, no, no.  The Utterly Pathetic cannot seem to operate the SP route properly, let alone the WP.  

From Salt Lake City/Ogden to Reno is either double track or two main lines.  And UP still cannot keep the railroad operational.  

All the owners want is stable and increasing stock prices.
Wealth building is the name of the game for investment funds as it is for most of us.
In my opinion those facts will not change.
The only solution to obtain a reliable, safe rail trainsportation utility for the nation as a whole is to force safety and service regulations down their throat.
If the safety and service requirements are uniformly applied there should be no profit advantage in failing to operate safely and fairly (like a true public utility).

it's simple.  hire enough m.o.w. sections to keep the track clear/maintained and give them the track and time to maintain it.............

An actual reading of the BSAP indicates they are requesting a six-month *temporary* discontinuance to allow the ground to thaw for removal of contaminants and the installation of improvements.  Also, Amtrak 5 and 6 operate nowhere near the track segment in question.

this looks like Near Gerlach someone said, maybe they can get some burning man particpants to undercut the fouled line, UP hasn't done it in 10 years they have 2 signalmen for 200 miles perhaps, they handle the switches correspondANCE  too.  cHICKENS ARE STARVING BECAUSE OF THIS , AND FOSTER FARMS MAY TO KILL THEM

Wonder when the last time the FRA went over these tracks?

Economies of scale is a real thing, but UP seems to have forgotten that deferred maintenance is like taxes, they both come due …. eventually. “An ounce of prevention…” is tough, even in my current role. But it’s the only way to survive long term.

Unless the idea is the NP-SP&S thing between Pasco and Spokane: let one turn to junk then it is no longer worth having, need to abandon.

Well said, sucks most companies don't look at it that way, they look at what bigger can do and all, but once it happens boy does the opposite show up in a heartbeat!
