Passenger Trains > Amtrak is the Best!!

Well according to a young Frenchman named Thibault Constant, who has ridden thousands upon thousands of miles on international trains, Amtrak is his favorite!
This is based upon the Sightseer Lounge Car. He is in love with this particular car and states nowhere else such a wonderful car exists and the ambiance it creates!

I rode on Superliners throughout the 1980s, mostly on the California Zephyr, Desert Wind and Southwest Chief, and they were fantastic, comfortable train cars and I liked the hi-level lounge seating better than I did the older dome cars.

Well-maintained and well-staffed, they were great . . .  but these days . . . ?

Lucky we have a lounge car with sightseer windows. The car was planned to be plain-Jane until Graham Claytor intervened and ordered dome type windows to be added

Wonder if the new LD cars being contemplated will have dome-type of windows in the lounge car?

Have ridden many trains in Japan, China, England, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Italy, Czech Republic, Spain, Switzerland. The only thing that compares to the sightseer lounge cars are in Switzerland. At least, from what I've seen.

There's some nice Swiss passenger sightseeing cars......

I've ridden on trains in most every country you mentioned, and I'd agree that the Swiss panoramic dome cars are about the best comparison. It was a cool experience riding in a train clinging to cliff sides above valleys and going through spiral tunnels in the Alps on the way to Gotthard Pass. We transferred to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bann in Göschenen, and while it didn't have panoramic dome cars, I'd also highly rate that train ride. The Swiss know what they're doing when it comes to railway engineering.

Ride in the front seat on the Golden Pass into Montreaux...doesn't get any better than that !

I like the lounge cars too, but,   a.  It has to be on the train, and   b.  the train has to actually run.   Amtrak has increasingly proved itself unable or unwilling to accomplish one or both of these objectives recently.

Buying an Amtrak ticket right now is like shooting craps.  Just depends on how lucky you feel.
