Zephyr Cancellation
Author: sethamtrak

Guess there aren't enough cars to make up another set in Chicago and/or the crew for the trains are now out of place from the late 6.

Cancellation is tomorrow’s 5 (5/25) as the eastbound Zephyr (6/22) hasn’t even made it to Iowa yet. Train is over 17 hours late, and still has a long ways to go.

I can see Oakland not having enough equipment to make a stub train, and using short turns likes they did at Sacramento the other week. But Chicago should have enough equipment to run a stub train, and a rested crew. To me this smacks of Southwest’s problems over the holidays. Not enough investments in the systems, processes, equipment, and people to run your operation when things inevitably go sideways.

51 (Beech Grove Shuttle) came into Chicago yesterday with 500, 68 (fresh paint), two baggage cars, one viewliner sleeper, two superliner sleepers, and a superliner diner. Find two coaches and there is your substitute consist.

Fresh phase V. No longer the most horrible looking P42 in the fleet.

So what happens now? Does this train return to Emeryville as a deadhead move, or will the Emeryville departure of this equipment set as #6 also be annulled?

What I find most disheartening about this, is by calling the Amtrak number, 1800-USA RAIL, you're doomed to waiting about an hour on hold with really annoying music for someone to come on the line and tell you really nothing.

I believe Emeryville will see a cancellation of the Jan 27 departure for 6.
