Passenger Trains > Ohio Amtrak maybeDate: 02/08/23 17:24 Ohio Amtrak maybe Author: MEKoch Today Gov. Mike DeWine authorized his rail agency to study Amtrak service on two routes:
Cleveland-Toledo-Detroit and Cleveland-Columbus-Dayton-Cincinnati This is only a STUDY............. And the USDOT will pay for it. BUT in Ohio this is a big political step for a Republican governor. DeWine was easily re-elected in November, 2022. So, he could afford to authorize a study. This was encouraged by Amtrak in their new corridors vision plan of 4-21 (Amtrak Connects US), which included both of the above routes. Yes, we remember Gov. Kasich in 2011 who sent $400M back to Washington, DC and said no thanks. For us in Ohio, today's announcement gives us hope. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 02/09/23 15:14 by MEKoch. Date: 02/08/23 17:59 Re: Ohio Amtrak maybe Author: ProAmtrak The Lake Cities needs to come back, I know it was great using that train for people connecting with 48 and 49, but will the study pay off? I doubt it the way Ohio is!
Date: 02/08/23 18:02 Re: Ohio Amtrak maybe Author: joemvcnj Lake Cities means no Pontiac, don't know about Detroit, and lousy track down to Toledo. The Thruway bus to Michigan is actually better. Ohio doesn't care about Michigan anyway.

On YouTube, there is a video from the early 90s of a 3 car Amtrak test train north of Columbus and again just east of Springfield.

How hard is it to simply say “we are going to fund a train in each direction daily for 4 years and see how it does.” Use the previous studies as a basis for picking station locations etc. there are already stations in Cincy and Cleveland. Put one in Columbus on the north side of town near Ohio State and get on with it. Posted from iPhone Date: 02/09/23 00:14 Re: Ohio Amtrak maybe Author: GenePoon PC1974 Wrote:

Date: 02/09/23 09:03 Re: Ohio Amtrak maybe Author: CPMorris Another empty, meaningless study which will result in nothing.
"A Republican Governor." I heard the same support and promise from "Republican Governor" Jim Rhoades back in 1976. How did that work out? Sad fact of the matter is car crazy, highway happy dumb ass Kasich foolishly wasted a one-time only opportunity back in 2010. If he had acted properly, those trains would now be running already. Sorry to diminish your "hope" MEKoch, but it ain't happening. Such is life in Ohighway - You know that much better than me!
