Passenger Trains > Tren Maya on International Board

I posted recent photos of the under-construction Tren Maya project in the Yucatan Peninsula on the International Board.  It's scheduled to open later this year, and if it comes off as planned, it will be the biggest new passenger rail project in North America.   So worth paying attention to. 

It will also be the newest geographical expansion of the contiguous North American railway network since 1979, when the line to Lazaro Cardenas (now KCS's port of the Pacific) was opemed.  Befoe that, IIRC, it was the extension to Great Slave Lake in Canada in 1964. 

Will they have any transbay tubes?

Good one, Jim!  No tubes unless they are through the limestone and the cenotes!  But they sure are building faster than CA HSR!

They are also building quickly and without respect through natural and tradition peoples' land in a reckless manner, reminiscent of the robber baron era in the States.

RevRandy - Yes, it is very controversial for the amount of forest/jungle they are clearing for the ROW.   It appears the ROW will be totally fenced, and there will be no grade crossings - all crossing roads will have grade seps.  So one area of concern is how will animals migrate across the ROW?

Animal bypass tunnels... Not as controversial as the drama-hungry media shows...

Most of it is a complete weed covered line reconstruction which requires clearing vegetation. Proper EIR's were made, but again: Media sensationalism prevails.

Yes, completely grade separated...

Several companies competed for equipment, including Nippon Sharyo and Siemens, but Alstom won for the passenger equipment...

As for freight, there were ACTIVE shippers who were cutoff. Looking forward for them getting reconnecting. We still don't know what freight locos Tren Maya will buy/lease...

Yes I saw some of the "stranded" freight cars on the old FUS system and will do a post on Internationl Board soon about that.
