Passenger Trains > New $84 mil. dollar parking garage (& station) - Claymont DE

A new "station" is moving forward along Amtrak's Northeast
Corridor at Claymont, DE.  The $84 million dollar parking garage
and its attached small passenger station with crosswalk are expected
to open this Fall, replacing the original (rebuilt) station located on
a curve about a half mile south. 

The parking garage (and station) are being built on the site of a
former steel mill. The land for the $84 million dollar project was
donated, thereby affording such an "attractive" price.

According to the original multi-million dollar study, the garage and
its adjacent small station were to cost a meer $54 million dollars
and was to be completed by 2021.  Imagine the surprise when
it went over budget and got delayed 2 years!

The current station will remain as a trailhead for an upcoming
riverfront park.

Great to see that it's coming along nicely. It will sure be a wonderful facility when it opens, especially benefiting people with mobility limitations and reducing the dwell times at Claymont Station. We have to wonder if it will still be a good station to railfan?

The crosswalk might offer unique views, assuming
the catenary poles and wires do not obstruct the
view.  Still, nothing can come close to the unique
location of the original station which is located on
an elevated four track curve.  Better get your pics
now before they fence that off!

No doubt the parking will be more than it is at the
current station.

It's nice that of the $84 million dollars, there was
some funds available for some station elements to
be incorporated.

Meanwhile in Newark,DE 18 miles south, the train station has remained incomplete since 2018.  Mega plans for reuilding an entire interlocking and reconfiguring track.  Trains still use the 85 year old platforms.

Ugh..... The electric arc steel mill was kinda cool.  they had several SW's.  They received scrap and shipped plate steel by rail.  They had a lot of near in-house flat cars and gondolas too.      Now its a parking garage.  The numner of industries that have closed in SE PA, is just overwhelming.  IOts sad, IMHO.

The brand new transportation center project in NRK is taking way too long to be built. The current station setup doesn't come anywhere near meeting the ADA standard requirements. Back to Claymont, yes, the parking lot will be very big. For those people who live in the north end of Wilmington plus any of the towns along or very close to I-95 between Wilmington and the DE/PA border will likely continue to use Claymont Station. More high level platforms need to get built in Septa territory and starting along the Wilmington/Newark Line would be great. Most of the Septa platforms south of PHL are along straightaways so high level platforms should be built at those first-for instance, Marcus Hook, Chester Transportation Center come to mind. Hopefully after the Claymont Station is done, Septa could start running more trains to Wilmington.

Any mention of Amtrak making this a station stop or is Claymont strictly for SEPTA commuter trains?

I don't think it's in any plan to have Amtrak trains stop at Claymont. I'd much rather have Amtrak stop at Secaucus Junction(right after Gateway Project is completed) given that that's a connecting to more train and bus routes, than have Amtrak stop at Claymont Station.

It would certainly be more convenient than Wilmington but I doubt you’ll ever see Amtrak servicing two stops located 5 minutes apart from each other.
