Passenger Trains > Springtime on RockyDate: 05/11/23 21:51 Springtime on Rocky Author: railstiesballast On April 20 my wife, brother, his wife, and I rode the Rocky Mountaineer from near Moab to Glenwood Springs.
Earlier I posted pix of meeting No 5 at Grand Jct. with the soot-stained transition sleeper earlier. Here are a few more covering the 4/21 trip from Glenwood Springs to Denver. Technically Spring had arrived but for parts of the trip the April showers were frozen. Not that was enough to keep me inside the vestibule windows, God I love riding in their open air vestibules! Both days we met three westbound freights, including oil, coal, and manifest freight, but no containers or pigs, and it seemed to me they were rather short trains, not even filling the modest sidings on the old DRGW. First is a BNSF at Gore, note the high gloss on the RM sides giving a mirror duplicate of the locomotive and the track. Second is climbing up Gore Cyn. On milder days we might see very serious white water rafting down below. Third is our meet with No. 5 at Sulpher in spitting snow. It was a crummy meet but the crew explained it well: other sidings that might have worked out better were full or out of service for work. It was a much cleaner set of equipment. Besides the price the only thing not to like about the RM is how our once vital trains are becoming amusement rides. My first Zepher ride was in the early 70s just after Amtrak, this is perhaps my 12th trip "Through Not Around the Rockies." ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 05/12/23 02:52 Re: Springtime on Rocky Author: goduckies Nice, the open vestibule if you can get access is worth the price alone on that route.
