Passenger Trains > SEPTA Stopped on CSX Tracks Before Collision Says NTSBDate: 09/18/23 11:32 SEPTA Stopped on CSX Tracks Before Collision Says NTSB Author: pt199 A 2021 collision between a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority trolley car and a CSX train was caused by the trolley’s operator stopping the car on the diamond where the two rail lines crossed.
The National Transportation Safety Board found that the trolley operator used the car’s emergency brake to halt the trolley but in the process fouled the CSX track. The collision left five SEPTA passengers, the trolley operator and the CSX locomotive engineer suffering non-life-threatening injuries. The Dec. 9, 2021, crash occurred at the Darby Diamond grade crossing near Main and Sixth streets in Darby, Pennsylvania. The trolley was heading eastward whereas the CSX train was westbound. Following the crash, SEPTA conducted a training campaign to remind trolley operators of the procedures for making a safe stop at the SEPTA-CSX crossing. SEPTA, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission, CSX, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and Darby Borough funded a $1 million project to improve safety at the Darby Diamond crossing. Jump the freight rail?

A close look at the diamond shows that the railheads of the trolley tracks are slightly higher than the railhead of the CSX track. As the trolley crosses, the weight carried by each wheel is briefly supported by the flange riding on the CSX railhead. The advantage is that the CSX track is continuous rail and is not subject to the high impacts and resulting maintenance of a traditional frog. Tough to squeeze stacks under trolley wire. Of course Baltimore tunnel is even bigger clearance issue.
