S.F. Muni Now Has a Red Stripe Blackpool Boat Tram
Author: milepost20

In 1934 English Electric built 12 trams for Blackpool, England with two of those boat
trams still serviceable in that city today.  The San Francisco Munipal Railway eventually
acquired two--the 228 back in 1984 and added the 233 in 2013.

To add some color to their fleet and distinguish between the two the folks in Blackpool
painted one survivor in a new red and cream scheme with the other remaining in traditional
green and cream.  S.F. Muni has now done the exact same thing with the 228 in red and cream.
A little more history:

The 228 is seen on Mission St. today hanging a left onto the Embarcadero where it will layover
for a few minutes before heading for Pier 39.  Most of the photos show the tram without
passengers as they made a non-revenue loop south of the Ferry Building stop via Steurt and
Mission Streets.  Passengers could only ride(no fares collected) between the Ferry Building
and Pier 39.

The 228 is seen in front of the Ferry Building in two photos taken today and making its way
north in a going away shot bound for Pier 39.  The tram is scheduled to be out for Fleet Week
next month.

The Ferry Building's clock tower is covered in scaffolding for a repaint with the rest of the
building just getting started on a major rebuild that will last for the next two years.

Bonus shot for you SoCal fans: "Pacific Electric" 1061 was one of the dozen or so PCC's on
the streets today.

The ends of the Blackpool car almost looks like a Crown Firecoach Fire Truck.

Nice work.  Is this a "Kodachrome" software tweak?     As I plan to visit the new Caltrain cars Saturday, I willbe on the lookout for the boat.

Great seeing a PE PCC, even though a model they never had.

Awesome photos, sure miss seeing the F line and the vareity of car types and paint schemes.  I was wondering about the work on the Ferry Building, I was thinking that they had just remodeled it, but then realized that was 20 years ago now!  I like the red & cream paint job on the boat, it looks good.  Need to go catch a ride, especially this time of year.

If it wasn't Crown Coach, my first impression was someone had a lot of spare VW bus bodies laying about.

The boat trams are both ugly and cute.
