Passenger Trains > Charger Test Train on the Delaware Today

Amtrak operated a positioning move with three new Chargers today on the Northeast Corridor. Test Extra 834 crossed the Delaware River at Morrisville, PA shortly after noon with 50th Anniversary decorated 301 in trail. The special was bound for Sunnyside Yard in Queens where it laid over for several hours before the actual test program began. US Route 1 and the iconic TRENTON MAKES bridge provided an interesting backdrop.

Makes me smile!  Yes, three engines and 2 cars.  Not sure what ind of test run that is?  Not taking any chances.

Not as true a statement as it once was - but that applies to many area of our industrial economy.

Yes. Many factories used to line the Pennsy and Reading tracks.

Automobiles to porcelain toilets to wrenches.

3 engines and 2 cars, bet they still can't make the advertised.

So what were they testing with 3 Chargers in electrified territory?

As a follower of 301, I was wondering why it was sitting in Philly per the tracking site.

Three Chargers in hopes at least one of them might, maybe work the whole way.

I'm guessing Amtrak would cap this test train with a Sprinter somewhere to go through the river tunnels to Sunnyside Yard in Queens?

Maybe just qualification runs with the new fangled locos for the NY Division crews.

The actual testing occurred on the Empire Division at night, not on the NEC. The train made a round trip from Penn Station to Croton-Harmon on MNCRR to observe cab signal operations.


 

Thanks.  I wonder where 301 is off to next.

Testing concluded. All three Chargers will be sent back to Washington and placed in regular service.

Left with 3 chargers and 2 cars. Probably arrived with 3 dead units a P42 and 2 cars lol
