Amtrak 80 9/4 - what happened?
Author: RMD23

I happened to watch EB/NB AMTK 80 by Thomasville, NC on Virtual Railfan while drinking coffee this morning, and now I see it is juust leaving DC. Wondering what happened to it?  Looks like it was in Greensboro for 4 hours+?

_ stopped north of High Point (HPT) due to a trespasser coming
_ in contact with the train. A lengthy delay is anticipated
_ while local authorities conduct their investigation. We
_ will provide an update as more information becomes available.

I honestly do not understand why it takes so long.  I suppose if the crew needs relief, that would take some time...

I was on the Crescent years ago in Louisiana and we hit two trespassers.  The delay was 2 hours.  The crew did continue.  I am pretty sure that I would not be able to finish the run if I were in the cab.

I don't think "trespasser coming in contact with the train" tells the story accurately in this situation.  What actually happened is that 80 struck a telescoping boom construction forklift at a grade crossing between High Point and Greensboro.  The collision resulted in the death of the forklift operator.

Most likely if it was a fatality the appropriate corner must come out and investigate. Depending upon the area, that may take a couple hours for the corner to just arrive.

Only a few NC counties still have coroners. The rest have Medical Examiners. But at the scene of an accident death, it's the same thing.
