Passenger Trains > Amtrak 371 Pere Marquette surpriseDate: 02/01/25 06:24 Amtrak 371 Pere Marquette surprise Author: JPB As captured off Virtual Railfan's Porter Jct IN live cam:
Screen grabs 1 & 2: Amtrak 371, the wb Pere Marquette, featured 3 Superliner-I s in its consist on Saturday 2/1/25: coach 34048, coach 34063, and snack coach 35003. This train's consist can vary widely, apparently. Screen grab 3 is from 1/13/25 shows three Siemens cars sandwiching a Amcafe. more... Edited 1 time(s). It's not the Pere Marquette but screen grab 5 depicts another interesting consist - Amtrak 350, the morning Pontiac-bound Wolverine featuring a Charger SC-44 pulling two Viewliner baggage cars, a Horizon coach, and 2 Siemens cars. As the Michigan Services timetable says nothing about Amtrak 350 handling checked baggage, I'm guessing the 2 baggage cars are being used to add more axles to the otherwise 3 car consist? That would mean it and 15 seats in the Amlfeet car are all Business class, but how they were sold is anyone's guess.

Yes, the two baggage cars are being used for axle count. Wonder why so many Venture coaches are suddenly broken/bad ordered? The superliner trio was working the Borealis for a few rotations. It is now all Amfleets. Date: 02/01/25 08:46 Re: Amtrak 371 Pere Marquette surprise Author: jp1822 sethamtrak Wrote:

That's good to hear that the Borealis is all Amfleets. They are most reliable, but their toilets can still freeze. The 1970s "ole faithfuls" to the rescue. The Pere Marquette has bounced between Superliners and single level cars over the years. Date: 02/01/25 09:30 Re: Amtrak 371 Pere Marquette surprise Author: joemvcnj sethamtrak Wrote:

Yes, on the 1340 set arriving into Chicago today. 341 tonight, 332 and 1333 tomorrow. Four amfleet 1 coaches, amfleet dinette. The 1333 that went up today was the standard horizon set. The Horizons are just such a let down and poor excuse of passenger cars when launching brand new exciting state corridor routes in 2025. They've been scheduled for retirement so many times and then "brought back to life!" Amtrak needed to have a fleet of "WOW" cars to meet this need of new service, not 37 plus year old passenger rail cars that are nothing more than glorified commuter cars with Amfleet seats. Gardner, Harris, and Amtrak in general say how Amtrak is just a contract operator of passenger rail service, but the equipment provided should be a standby fleet that's better than the Horizon fleet. I am a fairly regular passenger on the Pere Marquette service, and long ago learned never to be surprised at what kind of equipment we would have. I've had Superliners a number of times, plus Amfleet, Horizon and Venture cars in various combinations. It can be interesting, to say the least. Lately, the Ventures have been pretty regularly used, usually with an Amfleet food service car. On several trips in the last year, that Amfleet car had a recently refreshed interior, with new upholstery in the table booths, LED lighting, new lighter and brighter wall coverings, and some upgrades around the service counter. A very pleasant car - the upgrades all looked quite good. The Amfleet cars keep soldiering on, a tribute to their solid Budd design and construction. We can only hope that the Ventures will give such long service.....(hopefully with better seats, too). Thanks for this thread. I had seen some of these scenes on the Porter Jct. cam, but it was good to see all of these examples of "my" train as it's now running. MC Muskegon, Michigan |
