Currently closing in on Cleveland, OH. The leader was 122, set out somewhere as it now has 114 running solo. I doubt 48 will get out on time tonight. Of note in the consist, the first Boston coach is a Horizon.

I have to assume that the Horizon on the Boston section is a short-haul ride.  At least 448/449 have had two coaches this winter.

Shame on the accident in NY.  God bless the souls involved.

Usually when they have to use a high density coach on 448/449, it's the second coach. The first car is used for the longer distance travelers. Maybe 448/449 is down to one coach or maybe Amtrak just doesn't care anymore.

Some Lake Shore Limited consists have a regular Amfleet II coach for its second Boston coach. There had been an Amfleet business class car that was subbing, but now there seems to be a Horizon coach that is mainstay.......Thankfully, Amtrak hasn't removed the quantity of coaches on the Lake Shore Limited for the winter. I am sure some of that may be to compensate for the crappy time-keeping of the Floridian. The Lake Shore has a descent departure time out of NYC (although 4 pm would be better - just saying), but the eastbound departure of 9:30 pm is HORRIBLE. Completely a cause-effect of the elimination of the Three Rivers that was the clean-up train out of Chicago, and STILL had a chance to connect in Philadelphia with NEC trains and other trains bound for southern points.

"Alshannan was standing outside of his SUV when he was hit, police said. He became trapped between the train and SUV, police said."

You have to wonder how that happened.  He surely was not standing far clear of the tracks when the collision occurred; even a 19 year old should know to do that.

I would hope he wasn't standing ON the tracks, waving at the oncoming 79mph train, trying to get it to stop; and that the story wasn't sanitized for the public.

That struck me as being odd to - he was already outside of the vehicle, why didn't he clear the tracks altogether as the train approached and then collided. There may have been a reason, but we'll never know. Sad situation for all those involved directly and indirectly.

We had a suicide like that about 30-or-so years ago involving what was then the evening Amtrak train from Seattle to Portland (We didn't have the Cascades yet; that train was called the Mt. Rainier).  The incident happened in south Auburn.  I met the train at Tacoma.  I don't believe they were relieving crews involved in incidents in those days unless it was the crew's fault, which this wasn't.  Despite what happened, there was no sign of anything on the front of the engine.

My guess he was trying to push his vehicle off the crossing in a desperate attempt to save it?

I doubt that. He would have been pushing it sideways. The vehicle became "disabled" on the tracks right before the train showed up and he was pinned between the locomotive and his vehicle. I hate to say it, but it reads like a suicide to me.
