Passenger Trains > Over the Top - Acela Telephoto at Princeton JunctionDate: 03/07/25 09:04 Over the Top - Acela Telephoto at Princeton Junction Author: Mgoldman This definitely ranks up there among my favorite images and "visual finds" among my
travels along the NEC through the decades: Amtrak's Acela Express rises over the crest just shy of the Princeton Junction station in West Windsor, NJ. Captured here on 1/9/25, northbound, under a canopy of recently upgraded constant tension catenary. The exagerated crest is seen through the equivalent of an 840 mm lens. Speeds through here now top out at 150 mph, with an increase to 160 mph expected when the Avelia Liberties (Acela II's) arrive, sometime, theoretically, later this Spring. The United Aircraft Turbo Train reached 170.8 mph through here in December of 1967. /Mitch Date: 03/07/25 10:53 Re: Over the Top - Acela Telephoto at Princeton Junction Author: co614 That's the stretch of track where the newly built Pennsy T-1 steam locomotive can challenge the Brits for the Land Steam Speed Record held by the Brits since 1937 at 127.5 mph. IIRC this high speed stretch goes for 16 miles and includes a number of wayside depots that will make perfect places to witness the effort. All things considered IMHO the new engine should do at least 140 mph maybe a bit more??
Sure will be a heck of a sight. Can't wait. !! Ross Rowland Date: 03/07/25 11:35 Re: Over the Top - Acela Telephoto at Princeton Junction Author: thebluecomet A work of Art. Hopefully an IOTD.

There’s been lots of ongoing infrastructure work between Hamilton and New Brunswick over the last 4 to 7 years as part of the New Jersey high-speed rail project some roughly 20 miles. I know there was talk of realigning the track, but I’ve seen no visual signs of change. There are certainly a lot more catenary poles. /Mitch Posted from iPhone Date: 03/07/25 16:36 Re: Over the Top - Acela Telephoto at Princeton Junction Author: thebluecomet Rail replacement on track one scheduled to be done by the end of March. They've been working during overnight hours for quite a while now weather permitting.
