Passenger Trains > Caltrain's San Francisco F40PH Storage InventoryDate: 03/15/25 16:55 Caltrain's San Francisco F40PH Storage Inventory Author: milepost20 19 of Caltrain's 20 F40PH's are now stored in San Francisco with the 917 and 918 the most recent
arrivals. MP15's 504 and 503 are seen today spotting those two units for storage just west of the 6th Street on ramp/off ramp overpass. 915 is unaccounted for and I assume still in San Jose. I've guessed that wreck damaged 919 is the one unit not going to Peru unless it's wanted just for parts. Caltrain keeping one "heritage" F40(repainted in original colors) would be a nice gesture..... Meanwhile, AEM-7's 929 and 938 remain rusted to the rails near the old 4th Street Tower with an uncertain future. Seven gallery cars, Caltrain's two cabooses and the two Christmas train flatcars round out the San Francisco inventory. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 03/15/25 17:06 Re: Caltrain's San Francisco F40PH Storage Inventory Author: DocVooDoo In 1985 I had just graduated from high school and accidentally ended up seeing the farewell to Harriman cars. Somewhere there are pictures of that. Hard to believe that was 40 years ago. The AEM7 looks spiffy, and has (with new paint) aged better than I have I think.

Or maybe the ones the CNW once had? amtrakbill Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > DocVooDoo Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > In 1985 I had just graduated from high school > and > > accidentally ended up seeing the farewell to > > Harriman cars. I'd love to see what port they use--hopefully they ship via the Port of SF--maybe finally see that new rail bridge on Illinois Ave. get used into the port for dockside loading.

They were originally CNW, cab cars 171 and 175 (built 1960 by Pullman-Standard), and coaches 81, 86, 91, 102, 109, 111 (built 1961 by P-S). Rocky Mountaineer has owned them since 2019. I was thinking that Rocky Mountaineer could convert them to Silver Leaf cars or something similar to expand capacity on their trains, especially since the Journey to the Red Rocks (Denver to Moab) route is having to operate with just Silver Leaf cars. They would certainly need to renovate, gut, and rehab them more into scenic gallery cars of sorts, but Rocky's pretty familiar with that! Genius move to have the Silver Leaf PLUS class as a "step-up" and upsell program. Not sure what the long-term plan of these Gallery Cars for Rocky will be. There's always talk of them potentially operating more routes in the US western market, but nothing has emerged to date. There proven model could work in various locations/routes. Getting a train to/from Glacier Park would be very worthwhile (e.g. Salt Lake City to Whitefish, MT via the old Pioneer route, Pasco, WA, and up into the Empire Builder route to Glacier. Denver or Salt Lake City could be a really nice hub for Rocky Mountaineer! And to be clear - I do not like the company's corporate practices (e.g. during COVID when they denied refunds and even credits, or even there force of re-directing passengers to the Baff route or buses post-July 2024 when the Jasper fire struck). but operationally and providing a top-notch travel experience they excel at. ------------------------------------------------------- > amtrak needs all equipment Amtrak needs reliable locomotives, which the F40 has proven to be, in general. Even to have some additional cab cars made out of them, as I am sure they will still be needed in someway even after the Airos are delivered! The Venture and Horizon train sets will still soldier on for some routes. But Amtrak can't even get the rest of its Viewliner Sleeper and Diner fleet back into service after storing them in 2021. So all is doubtful. Date: 03/16/25 13:57 Re: Caltrain's San Francisco F40PH Storage Inventory Author: dan jp1822 Wrote:
