Where "elsewhere" are you reading about this?  For real?
Is this anyway related to DOGE?

The link doesn't include the equipment numbers, except for 90208.

Was the 90208 beyond repair? With how short they are of good motive power, you would think they would make every effort to fix a cab car to free up another locomotive. But then again....

they could get a used straight cab from the junkyard , maybe cheaper way to go?

To bad Amtrak, cant figure out how to gut the Turboliner power cars.
And run them with a Siemens or GE unit.

We could use the capacity, specially out here on the West Coast

Not enough room in a turbo power car for a conventional diesel.

And he'll, they're going on 50 years old and had serious design issues w the coaches. Melt 'em and try again.

They are not aluminum. They wouldn't even make good razor blades or soda cans.
Maybe a nice waiting room in Maricopa.

Waiting in the wings for cab car service are P42c 9700 and 9702 as well as HHP8c 9750,9751.9752 and 9753 ; the 9752 was noted in the phase 7 scheme last December ,  maybe some day soon !       Last month sales offering , closed Feb. 20 ,2025 , included 65,66,67 91,156 ,1000 and 1100. The 66 and 156 were heritage painted units , the 1000 and 1100 were shop switchers . The WNY&P moved one of the Acela 21s from Olean to Hornell on March 11th , it was noted that  six HSTs had been stored at Olean recently.

Probably cost more than buying new. Look what NY paid just to upgrade them.

Kind of amazing to see superliner cars being sold off when they are needed daily as axle count cars.

What condition are they in?

They are probably - or I would hope they are - wrecked cars. However, California went to Beech Grove and picked out about 20 plus cars to re-condition after Amtrak had declared the cars as "wrecked" and not worth repairing. They are now re-conditioned Superliners for the Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor trains. Seal up these two wrecked Superliner cars (of that's even possible) and run them as axle count cars to release some of those just riding the rails. Sure, they still will need maintenance work, but it won't be a double hit to maintenance and revenue.

If the frame is bent, they can't be used as axle count cars. That said, I don't trust them as far as I can throw them. So don't know.
