Passenger Trains > LIRR Yaphank Station Relocating Closer to William Floyd PkwyDate: 04/13/25 07:36 LIRR Yaphank Station Relocating Closer to William Floyd Pkwy Author: Passfanatic Construction has just started on the new Yaphank LIRR Station, located on the Greenport Branch. The present Yaphank Station sits in a hidden location extremely close to where Yaphank Ave intersects Park St. Ridership at this location isn't as strong as it can be. As a result, the MTA is relocating the Yaphank Station to be closer not only to William Floyd Parkway but a little more closer to the Long Island Expressway. It sounds like there also a lot more residential/commercial development where the future Yaphank Station will be. The Brookhaven National Labs are there. Of course, there are people who want to see more trains run on the Greenport Branch. I could see some additional trains running as far as Riverhead but I don't know if the ridership on the Greenport Branch would be strong enough for any new trains to be added between Ronkonkoma and Greenport.

I believe the National Laboratory is on that site. Posted from Android Date: 04/13/25 11:52 Re: LIRR Yaphank Station Relocating Closer to William Floyd Pkwy Author: Passfanatic Neat super throwback photo.
Ridership is expected to increase at the future Yaphank Station but in order to determine if it will be enough to significantly increase the train frequencies, we will have to ask ourselves which direction are the passengers heading in who are boarding trains in Yaphank and what time of day are most traveling who are using that station. I’m not sure if there will be many reverse commuters heading to Yaphank by train from points east who work at the laboratory. It’s not a fast ride at all on the Greenport Branch, even with the track being straight for miles and miles. If the MTA can’t upgrade the line to get at least 60 mph speeds on the Greenport Branch, then most people living around Yaphank will continue to drive to Ronkonkoma for a lot more frequent rail service. There is a proposal to extend the third rail to Yaphank but honestly, if they do extend it there, just build it all the way to Riverhead. My grandfather did basic training there in WW I before leaving for France.
