Rocky Mountaineer Passenger Train
Author: CR6377

I'm going to be around Denver CO in September. Is there a usual time the train runs through the area and around the Winter Park area? Thanks for the assistance.

Schedule can be viewed at https://rockytrain.com/rocky-mountaineer-schedule/

I guesstimate that the westbound train takes around one hour to reach the east portal of the Moffat Tunnel.
leaving Denver around 9:00 AM.

The eastbound train is less precise, and could transit the Moffat Tunnel any time between 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM.

The train transits the Moffat Tunnel westbound on Sundays and Wednesdays.
The train transits the Moffat Tunnel eastbound on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Yes, we booked the train in August and the one we are on leaves Denver Union Station on Wednesday morning around 8am and gets into Moab on Thursday around noon.

So about 1:55 at Winter Park.   You can park ner tracks at Ski slopes, cross ped bridge, turn right and be trackside.  Signal to left will show high green or maybe red over yellow when train is due.  Another place is at Beaver, or is it Beaver Village condos.  Go in entrance, turn left at T, go as far as you can staying to the right.  Walk 50 feet through trees to track view.  Not as good as it used to be, but great mountain backdrop.  Anywhere between Fraser and Tabernash.  Parking on bridge at Tab is really a no-no.  Done it a thousand times and only been chased off once.  But I don't sit there for hours either.  US 40 is a busy road these days.  From Tab to Granby is an easy run usually, or you can go on to Byers Canyon west of Hot Sulphur Springs.  WEst of Byers, tougher chase as the train can go faster than highway speed limit.

Good luck.

I noticed sometimes there is UP power on the train and not their own power. Is there a certain time of year that this happens or is it random?

IIRC all their power is leased, but a few units are leased and painted in their own colors wheras others are simply left in UP paint.

The Rocky Mountaineer did lease two Union Pacific units in previous years.  UP 5107, SD70M, was one of those units as seen 15 August 2021.

No UP units are being leased in 2025 as of this post.

In 2025, Rocky Mountaineer is using RMRX 8020 and 8021, GP40-3, on most runs.  They also lease RMRX 8600,SD40M-2, and 187, SD18M.  Video didn't load properly.
