Two Oldies with New Coaches
Author: sethamtrak

Hiawatha 336 departs from Glenvie, IL  after meeting an outbound Metra in the depot. The north facing charger (which I believe was 4601) is now gone. 519 fresh from Beech Grove repairs is now in charge of the north end. 514 still holding down the north end. Pretty sure it's been on the south end over a month if not longer, 90200 is still broken. Pretty cool to see two oldies with the new venture coaches. Hope to photograph this set tomorrow.  This morning the north facer P42 on the Borealis was removed and replaced with 518. As it turns out, the 518 replaced engine 81 which went out on the late 7 today.

Anybody think that SC-44 junk will be around in 30 years like these Dash-8's, or even 10 years ?

Nice! About to ride behind this exact trainset, it was the one that laid over in Milwaukee overnight to go back to Chicago in the 1pm opposing Borealis time slot as 336. (I'm saying "Borealis time slot" because it arrives at 12:45pm in Milwaukee and continues, so 336 has to use the layover consist.)

Hopefully it turns into 337, seems like it would.

The Borealis West today is a really ragged #48, with #78 trailing. As usual all summer, everything is either sold out or almost sold out with shortened consists. The crews are great, just needs to be more equipment.

Also, they've really tried to improve the Milwaukee side of boarding since the Borealis began. They've set up some clear lines and signage showing what will be Borealis West at 12:49pm and what is Hiawatha South at 1:05pm, both trains are very busy at about the same time. They often now have bikes and ADA passengers on the Borealis as well and make sure to try and have that boarding ready. Generally there is a lot of effort to quickly get people on and off clearly and get the Borealis out on time in a very narrow window.

It's a bit wild to think that thankfully the MKE station was built with multiple tracks and platforms and those a essentially all were unused until the Borealis began. Generally few trains overlapped until now, but now the multiple platforms are essential.

On that note, 339 took a hit yesterday at Milwaukee airport because the Borealis was late and had to take the single platform first. Thankfully the second platform is being built there, the flexibility is needed.

I'm 100% certain if there were trains to Madison, Green Bay, etc. they would be filled a week after starting...
