SMART debuts late train for Windsor fireworks, concert series

The town of Windsor and SMART are teaming up with a message to visitors of this week’s Independence Day fireworks show and the ongoing Summer Nights on the Green events: Leave your car at home.

SMART is launching a late-night, southbound train option to serve those looking to attend summer evening events in Windsor without the headache of looking for a parking spot.
On Thursday, Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit will offer a special southbound train departing Windsor at 10:50 p.m., after the KABOOM fireworks show, held at Keiser Park.

The following week, on Thursday, July 10, SMART will operate an additional southbound train departing Windsor at 8:41 p.m., after the conclusion of the Summer Nights on the Green concert. The train will operate every Thursday through Aug. 28.

Both trains will run to the Petaluma Downtown Station.

The late train is a test-run and collaboration between the town and SMART, which has its new northern terminus in Windsor and runs more than 50 miles south to the ferry stop at Larkspur.
“This pilot program is a great example of how regional collaboration can improve quality of life for Windsor residents and visitors,” said Mayor Rosa Reynoza in a press release.

The late-night train is an attempt by both agencies to alleviate traffic and parking congestion around the Town Green during the busy summer event season.

Windsor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Neysa Hinton said that, even outside of events, “parking is a big issue. It is hard for shoppers to find spots.”
Reynoza said she hopes that adding the late-night south will make “it easier for people to enjoy everything Windsor has to offer — while reducing traffic, easing parking demand, supporting our downtown businesses and advancing our sustainability goals.”

The move comes less than two weeks after SMART temporarily suspended its three early morning southbound trains after residents complained about the noise level of the train whistle. Those trains, which are scheduled for 4:35 a.m., 4:58 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., are slated to resume once the town receives its “quiet zone” designation from the Federal Railroad Administration.
