More Floridian Problems
Author: scraphauler

Train 41 shows departing Cary at 901 PM, 50 minutes late with note that train is expect to experience delays due to speed restriction, track work, and inspection.   Tropical Storm Chantal stalled over Moore County NC today, and dumped anywhere from 7 to 10 inches of rain.  Craines Creek Fire & Rescue reports that the dam on Crystal Lake in Lakeview has been topped and water is still rising at a rate of about a foot an hour.  Attached picture is from 845pm from the fire department.  You are looking west down Camp Easter Road (that runs on top of dam) from the CSX S Line in Lakeview area of Vass NC, about 4-5 miles north of the Southern Pines station.  Water is up to rails. Considerable concern of dam failure, as a result down stream evacuations are in progress.  Very questionable if 41 can get past this.  Dam failure will cause significant damage to the rail line.  State, Army Corp, and CSX inspectors en route to determine if safe to pass (assuming tracks don't go under water first, which very well may happen)

Meanwhile, I'm nice and dry, but my only way in and out require significant fording.  CSX has other flood concerns beyond the dam, plus ACWR and AR have track under water.

CSX FF Dispatcher said line is out of service from S217 south.  Track inspector says rail completely under water as far as he can see.  Report of a sizeable washout in the ACWR yard in Aberdeen with possible CSX main line issues.  No idea what Amtrak will do yet. Sit tight in Sanford, try to bustitute, return to Cary or Raleigh.

All service west of Cary (Carolinian, Piedmonts) and south of Cary (Floridian) suspended “indefinitely”. Trains 41, 76, 78, 79 all in disruption. 40 in Jacksonville right now - no word yet on what it will do - best bet would be take Meteors route and figure out what to do with passengers first missed stations. Rain is done but streams and rivers still riding on Floridian route, Piedmont route currently getting pounded.

76 has been holding at Burlington for four hours. 78 holding at High Point. I-40/85 is impassable between Burlington and Durham.

NB Floridian is indeed detouring via the Meteor's route.

40 is indeed taking the A-line. 41 is tiptoeing its way through central NC, many hours late.
I believe yesterday's 76 and 78 were terminated en route and busstituted, but I-40/85 remains closed so a bus ride means a slow detour.

Having run up the A-line, 40 is killing time at Selma so as to arrive Rocky Mount ontime. 41 eventually backtracked all the way to Selma and went south on the A-line; 8½ hours late through Fayetteville. No trains running between Raleigh and Charlotte at this time. I-40/85 is open with lane closures. Appears that today's 40 and 41 are annulled.

Seeing reports now that 41 in reversing all the way back to Selma did a portion of that reverse move with conductor protecting shove as opposed to having a CSXT or NS freight unit couple into rear and towing them (which is not unusual), but they found that the Chargers would trigger overspeed if they exceeded 15 MPH in reverse.  No idea if true, but it's stupid enough to be true and another sad indictment of the Chargers.

I assume the locomotives were elephant-style, so they couldn't just run them around the train at a convenient siding south of Raleigh. There's no wye between Raleigh and Aberdeen, and it appears they couldn't make it as far south as Aberdeen. I don't know whether they wyed at Raleigh or backed all the way to Selma or had a NS engine couple to the rear at Raleigh and pull them to Selma. If they ran the wye at Raleigh, to go south at Selma they've had to run the power around the train or use the connecting track on the NW quadrant which is frequently blocked with cars.

Piedmonts are running between Charlotte and Greensboro with bustitution between Greensboro and Raleigh. I've not heard when the Burlington-Durham segment will reopen.

NS advisory this afternoon said mainline Greensboro to Raleigh and CF Branch out of Greensboro closed through at least noon Wednesday 7/9.   CSXT has a L619 and L620 sneaking past Southern Pines, so their line is obviously open again at least for freight (and problem with speed restrictions).    ACWR lost approach to a bride that also undermined and shifted head-wall, so they are down for a few days.  No word on how bad AR got hit.   Flooding moving down Cape Fear River and impacting areas in Harnett and Cumberland County, and with rain predicted all week, could possibly see some issues on the A Line.

Well a Piedmont just left Charlotte at 6:05 pm - about an hour late on Tuesday, 7/8 - and said it is estimated to arrive into Raleigh 57 minutes late. Did Amtrak just forget to adjust the change in the bus east of Greensboro? Typically they have that service adjustment announced ahead of time or blank out the stops east of Greensboro, for example. Can wait and see!!!

79 terminated in Raleigh again today so my guess is they forgot to adjust it.

Yes. Still no trains Greensboro-Raleigh as of Wednesday morning. Let's see what happens in the afternoon.

Well, the southbound Carolinian tried to run to Charlotte today. 79 lost time in Virginia and left Greensboro this evening 1 hour and 15 minutes late. But Mother Nature was at it again. That area got hit hard again tonight and 79 has reportedly struck a tree before High Point and is currently dead in the water (no pun intended) with air line issues.
