An eastbound Amtrak Wolverine-service train for Detroit and Pontiac crosses the South Shore Electric's new double track alignment on the west side of Michigan City, Ind. on April 12, 2025. These diamonds, on former Michigan Central / New York Central track now owned and operated by Amtrak as its Michigan Line, remain as the only crossing at grade of an active Amtrak route with active tracks of a former electric interurban. A notable and unique point in railroad history. A former tower at the site was long ago demolished - I'm standing on part of the old foundation, still present, to make the image.

This location is usually called "Tenth Street."  Until the mid 1980s there were three tracks crossing the So. Shore.  The Mich Central was double track back then and the third track belonged to the Monon which came north from the town of Monon, IN  where it crossed its other main line.  Amtrak (or perhaps Penn Central or Conrail) single-tracked the Mich Central, and the Monon was abandoned in the mid1980s.

Nowadays, instead of three tracks crossing the single track South Shore, we have the single track Amtrak line crossing the double track South Shore.
