3(27) cancelled La Junta to Los Angeles.
Author: illini73

Due to "severe weather in the area resulting in flooding over the tracks" (didn't say where).

Currently heavy rain over eastern Kansas, but that is way east of LaJunta. Could be possible heavy monsoon storms over NE New Mexico on Thursday.
See: https://www.weather.gov/abq/

Possible impacts in NW AZ and southern CA from remnants of tropical storm Juliette, but that's pretty remote: https://www.weather.gov/lox

But in my opinion just another excuse to cancel service. Richard Anderson lives free in the minds of Amtrak senior management.

Edit: Isn't just a future problem. As I post below there is at least one washout just east of Lamy and #4 is cancelled at ABQ.

What an operation!  I try to stay away from the constant Amtrak bashing on here but now I must chime in.  Attached is what it says on the Amtrak app on my phone.  This site https://asm.transitdocs.com/ says it's moving at 60.5 mph and 9 hours 49 minutes late at Garden City, KS.  With 3 different reports which one is the traveling public supposed to believe?

There has been heavy rain in NE New Mexico.  There are flood watches out for the area from Raton to Santa Fe.

Isn't this 3 of the 26th, not the 27th?

3(26) is 10 hr 12 min late at Lamar, CO apparently with a freight leader (max. speed 70 mph).

3(27) has been cancelled La Junta to L.A. account water over tracks (somewhere).

Lamar is East of La Junta, so . . .

The AI machine can't get its 3's and 4's right at the moment.
3(26) has a BNSF leader plus 164-138-14 , so they mechanically assessed 3 P42's as bad then just happened to be unlucky to be near the flood advisories for San Miguel and Mora Counties in New Mexico.
3(27) they have already cancelled as was reported, west of LaJunta to LA
4(26) is holding at ABQ due to flooding, no other details yet.
4(27) is cancelled LA to LaJunta due to flooding already.

It's odd they killed off the second out trains each direction but haven't made up their minds on the first ones?!?! Oy vey!

A friend of mine just sent me a drone photo of a washout up to the ballast on Galisteo Creek just east of Lamy also exposing the adjacent buried communication line. As a courtesy to him I won't post the photo but the GPS coordinates on Google Earth are 35.4876052 N, -105.8726560. Further track problems just east along the tracks at Canoncito.

Thanks for the clarification Jimbo.  Just checked Flagstaff in my area of the country and failed the realize today's train was 3(26).

When you have confidence in your motive power you can do this (I apologize for a freight train picture on the Passenger Trains Board, but it makes the point and was taken at a passenger station in the gap between passenger trains):

One locomotive (no DPU), 135 cars, mostly empties, probably about 4,300 trailing tons or a 1.0 HP/TT ratio, suitable for flat midwestern railroading.  Railroad is CPKC on Metra trackage rights at the West Lake Forest, IL Metra station, 4:48 pm CT on August 23, 2025, the power (CSX ES44AC-H 737) isn't even theirs.  This locomotive could easily handle the 10-car Empire Builder of about 800 tons that passed here about an hour earlier.

Not unusual. Same thing happened to me a few years ago at about the same time of year.

Tropical storms come up the Gulf of California from Mexico into New Mexico and Arizona and dump lots of rain.

The current flooding in New Mexico is not from the tropical storm, but from a strong monsoon.

The tropical storm moisture -- if it gets to Arizona or New Mexico -- will occur over this weekend.

I saw 3 this morning and they took the freight motor off because I heard the usual Amtrak Horn when I got to work!

The freight motor (BNSF 6211) and the entire trainset of 3(26) turned at La Junta, CO to become 4(26), arriving Chicago this evening 6 hr 48 min late at 9:30 pm CDT.
Today's 3(26) into Los Angeles 12 hr 10 min late at 8:07 pm PDT was the trainset of 4(26) that turned back at Albuquerque, NM after receiving passengers bused from La Junta.

Also, 3(27) cancelled La Junta to Los Angeles has turned at the former point and is headed eastward across Kansas this evening as a stub 4(27) to Chicago.   On-time so far at Garden City, KS.
