Metra Derailment

Metra MDW train 2239 reportedly derailed leaving CUS this evening near Canal Street. Traffic was shut down for some time, then service restored using the other track(s). Trains are expressing back to Fox Lake and some trains are running as locals wayyy behind schedule. One regular rider who I recognized and chatted with at Glenview has been sitting outside waiting for over 3 hours.

Bad news for the riders, but that '70 looks and sounds great!

Engine 515 (SD70MACH) on the 16-degree (358 ft. radius) curve at Canal St. just east of the overhead bridge for the Ogilvie Transportation Center (UP) station throat.  16 degrees is about the sharpest curve you'd want on main track and would entail a 15 mph speed restriction.  Wheel climb could be caused by various things:  low spot in track; worn wheel flange contour; binding in truck rotation; etc.  Investigation will tell.

Have they run prior types of 6 axles locos over the last 50 years over there ?

Milw Rd had FP45's on psgr trains up to amtrak
Big EMD six-axles F40C's were run by RTA / Metra for years.
amtrak ran SDP40F's

Plus whatever BNSF or CP six axles that have pulled in a crippled No. 8 over the many years.

40+years of E8's and SDP40's got through just fine.

Also, remember that the SD70MACH units are equipped with the three axle HTC-R "radial truck".

Always wondered if there’d be an issue on how the MACHs would do on curves. Hopefully just a once in a million rather than a once in every thousand event.

The Es were excellent riding locos and never had speed restrictions like the SDPs did.

The SDP's didn't have speed restrictions when they ran on GOOD track. i.e. the Santa Fe.
