Crescents 19 & 20 meet at Spartanburg
Author: JPB

A rare event captured from Virtual Railfan's Spartanburg live cam Sunday 8/31/25:

A meet of Crescents at Spartanburg depot would be unlikely in the Amtrak era given its single platform but it came close to happening in the wee hours of Sunday 8/31/25.  Northbound Crescent #20 was running about 90 minutes late when it arrived at 0428 on the platform track. As it departed 6 minutes later at 0434, there was the headlight of #19 which had been cooling its wheels for 10 minutes, having apparently arrived Spartanburg at 0424. #19 crawled into the depot on the non-platform track stopping so passengers could use the Magnolia St grade crossing as the boarding platform (green circle in screen capture #3).

I miss the old schedule.  I would visit my daughter in NC and catch the Greyhound i  ASheville to Spartanburg.  Arrive in Spartanburg about 10:30 time to walk over to the trin station with a stop at Krispy Kreme.   Amtrak was due sometime after 11:30 PM but was usually late.  Nothing wrong with sitting on the platform on a hot summer night watching a few freights roll by.  Then you could hear the distinctive Amtrak horn in the the distant.  20 would round the curve and you thought sure it was going to blow right past.  Hogger knew his stopping point exactly and it looked like a stop you see on a model train set.

Alas those days are over.  Amtrak screwed the schedule by taking all day through Mississippi and Alabama.  And they still can't be on time.  And Greyhound pulled out of Asheville.
