TAW Date: 10/30/25 12:03 Re: Questing about Santa Fe power Author: randgust One of the reasons so many of the 'rider cars' (combines) survived was the use on the Fast Mail up through '67. Two of them are now on the Texas State Railroad. They were never air conditioned, either, pretty much throwbacks. Started life as buffet-coaches.
I rode on the Grand Canyon as a kid in '65 and I remember something heavyweight in the consist as that 'dark green car' but it could have been head-end. Date: 10/31/25 07:53 Re: Questing about Santa Fe power Author: jdw3460 The Santa Fe "Ranger" ran from Texas to Chicago, with terminal changes now and then. It was steam and all heavyweight into the '50s. When E-units on the CHI-LA main were being replaced with FT's, F3's, and F7's, the E units got to be regulars on the Ranger. The heavyweight cars continued on that train until it was terminated in May 1960. I think the same thing was true on the "Oil Flyer" from KC to Tulsa. They almost always used A and B units and something like 8 or 9 cars. Those trains were locals and had a lot of head end cars, including an RPO.
