And before phones it was laptops, and before that it was books and newspapers. And in some places, the view from the train isn’t all that great, so riders aren’t missing much.

And if they're commuters they have seen what's outside a hundred times already so they're not looking outside.

Reminds me of a train ride through Illinois. All corn fields the whole way so I an Illinoisan didn’t bother to watch for the umpteenth time.

A Brit riding next to me was mesmerized though. Looked at the corn fields the whole way. Said they don’t have farms like that in England.
