IC E8 #4044 First Test Run
Author: SVTRY

Back in November of 2002 the opportunity to purchase my own diesel locomotive came about. I have been an active member of the Monticello Railway Museum sence 1982. Back in 1956, in San Lorenzo, California, I got numerous cab rides in SP steam locomotives down to the Hayward station. Once there, I would clime down and walk the mile and half back home. Back then a 10 year old kid could do that sort of thing, but I digress. It only took 15 minutes to go from may be I could buy my own caboose to buying an operational E8 locomotive. In the 1990's the former PRR E8 #5764 pulled the Broadway Diner Train out of Nashville, TN. At that time my only experiance with diesel locomotives was riding in the museum's Wabash F7 as fireman. We ran the locomotive on a few weekends at the museum in 2004 before I started to rebuild it. All rust and structual bondo has been replaced with new steel. As the museum has an extensive collection of restored IC passenger equipment, the E8 is becoming IC #4044. To make a very long story short, twenty one years latter I took it out for its first test run.

Nice. Is that a 24RL automatic brake or a HSC?

Thanks,

Sam

I see you have mechanically blocked the dynamic brake lever. Is the unit not equipped with DBs, or are they just not operable at the moment?

PRR E8's were not equipped with DB.

Thanks. I was not aware of this. Fine looking restoration from what I can see and hear.

Maybe Amjoke could lease this engine for the winter on the long distance western trains.
