Passenger Trains > Did You Hear the Snow is Back?Date: 11/30/25 15:40 Did You Hear the Snow is Back? Author: Agent We had our first taste of winter in Iowa yesterday and it was a bit of a spoonful. Despite the storm, the eastbound California Zephyr was just a few minutes late when I caught it running east of Ottumwa. Although I think some snow or ice got stuck in the horn.

Reminds me of when I've been on the Empire Builder in winters - the P42 horns can certainly sound interesting with snow and cold! And on one eastbound trip on the Empire Builder, we were travelling from Grand Forks, ND to Fargo, ND and it was around 1 pm in the afternoon - over 10 hours late. The P42's horn had been stuck in the "on position" from nearly Grand Forks, ND. It finally "released" just as we came into Amtrak's Fargo, ND train station! The engineer was persistent into keeping us moving (at speed!). Not sure if it was a violation or he got a special waiver with the horn stuck on or not! Again, it finally did release, but I don't know how the engineer handled that screeching noise!!! We had three units on the Empire Builder. This was right after New Year's in Jan and it was below zero outside!!!! |
