Flying Over the Frozen Susquehanna River
Author: cr2581

Certainly not the day to be out for prolonged periods of time but I did manage to stay warm between the few trains that ran. First up was 2162 with the only NextGen set in service yesterday. It was followed by 2109 with the colorful "AI Workday" wrap and then I drove across the river to Havre de Grace to get a late running 185.

Enjoy and stay warm !

Nice work.

It was not a day to be outside for an extended period, least of all standing next to a frozen river!

Yes, that is really beautiful and really neat! I am borrowing to make this my desktop background - the one with the NextGen traversing the river!!!! Hope you don't mind!

Great photos.  Did an ice breaker create the channel?

Terrific shots. Havre de Grace was one of my most enjoyable vacation spots.

For the question about the channel, my guess would be a tug pushing a barge.  There's large rock quarry operation a bit upriver from there.  And barges moving piles of rock are a regular occurrence I believe.

During the Civil War when the bridges were out they laid tracks right on the ice and ran trains right on the frozen river.  Picture Amtrak doing thaT????

I just happen to be driving to Baltimore on Friday around noon and there was a tug pushing a barge opening the channel.  I don't think he was intentionally being used as an ice breaker, just going about his workday.
