Passenger Trains > Avelia Liberty at Newark Liberty International Airport StationDate: 02/25/26 17:50 Avelia Liberty at Newark Liberty International Airport Station Author: Mgoldman Generations apart was going to be the title of this shot until I discovered that Newark
International Airport - I station I've visited several times over the past two decades - the one that looks like it was built in 1955 was actually built as recently as 2001! Another surprise - the "Liberty" was added to the station name after 9/11 to honor the victims. And note, the "Liberty" was later dropped from the Acela Avelia and replaced with Acela "Nex Gen". Anyway - think I got it pretty good here, cropping out the often hard to deal with catenary poles in this telephoto that had me step way back to allow a near perfect crop. And can you believe that the Port Authority is going to spend $3.5B (yes, that's a B) on replacing the 30-year-old airport Monorail? Yes, it will increase capacity (only incrementally) and will supposedly be extendable and up-gradable (something they seemingly left out of the current system - nice job guys), but will pretty much just be an in-kind replacement. $3.5 Billion!! It's been discussed before, but for that kind of money I don't understand why they don't just extend the PATH train from Newark Penn Station to all the terminals. Years ago they had a plan to extend PATH by way of down neck Newark, doubling the distance and tripling the cost. Somebody dropped a dime and the Mayor, his girlfriend, and a few other folks went to jail for a while. They had quietly assembled property along the route before insisting on the new alignment. One station I have yet to spend any time at despite passing through countless times. A little trivia here, the land the airport is built on was owned by the CNJ and sold to the PANYNJ back in the fifties. The CNJ used the money to rebuild Allentown yard and other structures. The newer red brick buildings at various locations are those examples. Terminal A, the southern most terminal building sits half in Newark and half in Elizabeth. The city line runs right down the middle of the building. Gates are in Elizabeth and roadways in Newark.

Back before the Aldene plan went into effect, there was a Newark Airport station on the east side of the airport, It was located on the E'Port to Newark Broad CNJ station via Brills Jct. Today, it would be under the outer roadway of the Turnpike southbound. This is one of the better (and maybe best) views I've seen there. Thanks!
