Passenger Trains > Shore Line East at New London questionDate: 02/26/26 04:25 Shore Line East at New London question Author: JPB Per a Trains Magazine on-line article of 2/17/26, there is a proposal from Connecticut's Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto to replace M8 MUs in New Haven - New London service with diesel hauled trains to save $8.8M annually currently paid to Amtrak for electricity. Of late, many SLE trains but not all are in fact 3 car trains hauled by CT Rail P40s. Here's a screen grab from Railside Live's New London live cam of CT Rail 1634 arriving New London at 1748 Wednesday 2/25/26 taking the turnout to use station track 6, which in my observations of this cam, is a pretty rare move as SLE trains usually dwell on the main until they return west to New Haven. Perhaps Amtrak's NE Corridor traffic necessitated getting the SLE off the main tracks as it waited to return west? My question is has Amtrak strung catenary over track 6 yet? Some hangers have been in place to do so but I can't tell from watching the cam - I've not see any M8 MUs use track 6 but I might have missed it. Thanks.

It is a bummer about the possibility of Ctrail Shore Line East trains using a lot fewer M8 sets. Those M8 cars certainly were great for riding Shore Line East because of the comfortable seats, outlets in the seat rows, great acceleration, and able to achieve at least a 90 mph top speed. At least for us railfans who love to photograph diesel power, it would be great to get more photos of diesels under the wires. By the way, eventually, we will probably see the Alstom Adessia Cars assigned to Ctrail Shore Line East trains. The P40s and Geeps are up there in age and it would be nice for CDOT to consider ordering some sort of Tier IV diesel engine or even go the battery route to replace the P40s and Geeps assigned to Ctrail trains.
