NPCU 90406
Author: AndyBrown

A friend of mine noticed the F40 NPCU on the rear of one of the Amtraks at Elkhart this morning (0856am) if anyone's interested.  I thought that it usually hung out in Chicago but must've been out east lately.

That was part of Amtrak's display train and is the only ex-F40 NPCU with a working (at least it WAS working at one time) head end power plant. I'd be interested in seeing where it's going. Empire Corridor, perhaps?

Was the 90406 headed east or west ?  It was a regular on the Downeaster service for quite awhile last year  .

West.  Comments on VRF that I didn't notice earlier indicate that it's going to be retired at Beech Grove.  Bummer if true.

Andy  -  thanks for the answer .  Albany , Boston or New Haven don't have any NPCU s and I doubt Albany wants to lose a P42c ( 9700 is out on the West Coast still I think ) to Maine . The usual solution is a P42 or even a GP38-3 as was done last year .

I think they might need another cabbage in LA. As a few cab cars are down or in Beech Grove.

Pretty sure it's been out east since 2017. I heard it's got issues and is headed to Beech Grove. Whether or not it will be repaired remains to be seen. 90221 and 90200 have not been repaired.

I got a really good photo of 90406 at CPF-241 near Dover, NH last March.

Hopefully the HHP-C's and P42-C's will be replacing the retirement/storage of the F40 Cab Cars and Cabbages!!! There are three Amtrak baggage cars in Strasburg RR Company RR's Yard out in Pennsylvania. I have always wondered if they are the former display cars that were part of the "Amtrak anniversary train." I believe they were acquired by Strasburg RR in the past two or three years - a recent purchase, per say.......Or perhaps these baggage cars were acquired by a private company and await work at Strasburg's Mechanical facilities there - not sure.
