Cresent only going to Atlanta
Author: DM1980

Per tracker, train 19 is terminating in Atlanta, and 20 isnt on the tracker. Trackwork or derailment somewhere between Atlanta and New Orleans?

Happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR late winter/early spring due to NS trackwork blitz during the week south of ATL. On the weekends they do run to NOLA.

Amtrak used to make advance announcements with exact dates for the service disruptions.  Not any more, it seems.  Or maybe AI cannot think ahead.

The segment between Meridian and Atlanta is the section of track Union Pacific said they would add 10 round trip freight trains if they are merged with Norfolk Southern. You have to wonder how much capacity there really is on this route if they close it every year for track maintenance?

Meridian-B'ham-Atlanta is already busy, and on top of that B'ham-Atlanta is curvy and slow. I don't see how UP+NS adds that many trains without a massive upgrade.

And the way railroads are operating these days, the new company will defeinltey not invest in upgrades.  How does that help the operating ratio, after all?  I would argue that it does, or should, but capital investment by the rails seems to have stagnated, just like their traffic levels.  No vision, no creativity, dim future IMHO.  Things need to change.  But since the CEOs worship at the alter of Wall Street and quarterly returns, I do not expect change.

[sarcasm] To be fair, Southern, NS, has only owned this line for 150 years, so they probably havent quite made enough money to justify more double track / siding extensions, etc. [/sarcasm]

I'm on Amtrak 19 today, Friday, March 6 and we are on time out of Atlanta bound for New Orleans.  I'm on 20 from New Orleans to Clemson SC next Wednesday.  I don't know when they resumed full service on the route but I can assure you they've resumed it for today!
