A friend is traveling from Springfield to Rochester,  I did the booking, and could not get space on 449.  She wanted coach.  Sold out.  ONE coach?  For real?  So she is on a Trailways bus from SPG to ALB then to an Empire Serivce train.  The return is on 448.

449's delays were as a result of CSX freight trains  starting around Worcester and continuing west on the Boston Line .

I've been following the Empire Builder pretty closely and it looks like the modifications that Siemens recommended following the initial Charger winter meltdowns may have actually worked. The Chargers on the Empire Builder seem to be doing better than before. Hopefully I'm right and this can provide some comfort to understandably-nervous Lake Shore Limited folks.

I believe only certain Chargers have ASCES and can lead that train.

Yes.  I saw something recently about only Chargers numbered 370 and up qualifying for assignment to the Lake Shore. We've actually seen a lot of "370s" out here lately. I guess Amtrak is maybe getting them broken out here on the West Coast.

Demand not equalling capacity for a long distance train - that's nothing new. One coach between Boston and Albany???? Amtrak couldn't have pulled in another business class car from the Boston Yard?  Boston to Albany needs a minimum of two coaches at all times throughout the year.

One coach since January when consist was changed .

And will remain without a 2nd coach until summer, nor will the Cardinal ever get a 3rd coach - opportunity costs of the Mardi Gras, which has Amfleet-2 coaches and a case of Amtrak poaching the LD network to support the corridors.

The Boston section of the Lake Shore Ltd . usually returns to its regular consist in the Spring , CNOC has a call in the afternoon to tell terminals about the next day train make-ups needed  and for "turns" .
