The existing tunnels do not use any forced ventilation in favor of the piston effect of passing trains. I think there's a fire mitigation rationale for this, but I am wondering if Amtrak will use it to run diesel in the tubes.

I do wonder if these tunnels will have 3rd rail for emergency rescues as the current tunnels do. I am happy to hear that they will at least try to keep one of the original 1910 Hudson River Tubes open (repair one at a time, not both together), so that three are operable at any given time (e.g. the two new tunnels and at least one of the 1910 tubes. I thought they may close both of the original Hudson River tubes at the same time to refurbish and we wouldn't then really gain capacity till about 5 to 10 years AFTER the Gateway project was completed.

Wow, I wonder how often that's happened on other projects. I'd be really curious to see how they switch the things up, I'm guessing there's a way to remove parts of the cutting face from inside the TBM, I've just never seen how that's done. Thanks for the heads up about the video, this is one of those projects where it'll be easy to say "why didn't we do this sooner?" I know, politics, but still. :( Nathan Date: 03/06/26 20:52 Re: Virtual Tour - Hudson Tunnel Project Author: atsf121 Can't edit my post, but I was just watching the video and they are switching out the TBMs entirely before going under the river.
