Stepping in George Washington's footsteps...
Author: Pattenburg

With America celebrating its Semiquincentennial in 2026, what would be a more appropriate location to photograph NJT’s Raritan Valley Line then on the grounds of the Wallace House in Somerville, NJ. It was George Washington’s headquarters during the winter of 1778 – 1779. He would spend eleven days before leaving for Philadelphia to attend to Congressional matters for six weeks. When he returned to the Wallace House in February, 1779, his wife, Martha, aides and servants accompanied him. He and his staff were kept busy by hosting foreign dignitaries, preparing dinner parties and planning strategies for the spring military campaign. It was here that Washington and his staff planned the successful 1779 campaign against the Iroquois League, allies of the British. Seen here is NJT’s 5522 heading east on March 7, 2026.
