Train 50 Hits Tree in Indiana
Author: mbrotzman

Before you all start quoting the delay tracker labels, Eastbound Cardinal train 50 (10) hit a downed tree across the tracks that ended up severing one of the break hoses between cars. From the photo I saw it looked like the top of a tree with branch sized in the 1-4 inch range rather than a thick trunk. The incident was located "in the middle of nowhere" so it took a while to summon whatever assistance was required. T50 is moving again as of right now.

There were tornado warnings in effect and confirmed tornado
touchdowns on the route.

A patch job was done on one damaged car and it's brakes were cut out.
This limits the train to freight train speeds.

WOW! Mother nature (MN) apologizes for operating a TORNADO right in front (probably by 20 minutes) of the Cardinal!
The TORNADO operated parallel to the Kankakee Belt from Kankakee IL through Aroma Park, Lake Village to Roselawn (yes Roselawn is on CSX's Monon SD).
MN also ordered a SECOND TORNADO that hit areas near and around Renneslear, IN.
MN apologizes to Amtrak customers for any delays they suffered.
CSX apologizes for not having track inspectors on standby, "just in case". (Sorry, it's not 1950 anymore).
