HHPc's on the River
Author: cr2581

Amtrak continues to operate an HHP cab car train, allegedly now for the purpose of qualifying crews. Passenger Extra 887 was photographed as it crossed the Susquehanna River at Havre de Grace, MD March 10th. It has been rumored that these units may actually enter revenue service in the next several weeks. We shall see.

Great picture.  But are they qualifying new Engineers or are they qualifying old guys on HHP Cab cars.  But that doesn't make sense to me because why would you need to spend half a day going to/from Philly DC. It's a cab car and can't imagine it's much different from the cabs they already operate.

Are they going to start operating push-pull service on the NEC?

So my question then: do engineers need to be separately qualified on every different kind of engine a rr uses? Or if you're qualified on one, you're qialified on all?

I will gladly stand corrected, but it's my understanding that the HHPC's will be deployed on the NEC to eliminate putting an ACS Motor on each end for the "shuttles" between NYC and Washington DC. Cab cars to be on the Keystone Route, and possibly P42C's on the Springfield to New Haven Route? Perhaps the HHPC's will show up on the Keystone route - who knows. But, Amtrak needs to get P42 locomotives off BOTH ends of the New Haven Shuttles.......The P42s are needed for active duty, particularly in the Midwest to cover for the Corridor Chargers. I am glad to see this POSITIVE development - HHPC's and P42C's - at last. Lets hope that Amtrak chooses the P42s to convert to P42C's VERY carefully!!!
